Recently, Intuit QuickBooks has released a notice that they will be discontinuing the desktop version of QuickBooks Pro Plus, Premier Plus, Mac Plus, and Enhanced Payroll for new subscribers as of 9/30/24. This discontinuation does not affect the QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise versions.
What does this mean for current QuickBooks Desktop users?
Intuit has stated current users of the discontinued versions will still be able to renew their annual subscriptions and be provided the usual support for their current programs. However, Intuit historically has only provided support to the three most recent years of Quickbooks desktop (at this time that would be the 2022, 2023, and 2024 versions). This means users will still face the usual sunset date on supported services such as the payroll subscription in May of the third year.
For example, users of the 2022 version of QuickBooks Pro Plus will be able to use their annual payroll subscription only through May 2025 when it stops being supported. Since May 2025 is after September 30, 2024, users will not be able to purchase a newer year of the same version of QuickBooks in order to continue using their payroll subscription.
What are my options?
For customers that want to use their current version of QuickBooks with all of the supported services as long as possible, purchase of the 2024 year of their current version of QuickBooks desktop by 9/30/24 will allow them to access supported services through May 2027.
For customers that do not use any supported services and want to stay in their current year and version of Quickbooks desktop, they don’t need to do anything. Supported services include those that need a connection to the internet. Intuit states users will still be able to access their company files after the support sunset dates, but there will not be any updates or data back up services after discontinuation.
For users that require those supported services and want to stay in a desktop version of Quickbooks past the sunset dates, the Enterprise versions are still available for purchase after the 9/30/24 discontinuation date for the other versions.
